Hospital Ethnography (COGS 160: Design Analysis of Real World Environments)
Skills applied:
Ethnographic methods, Contextual interviewing, Work modeling

This project involved detailed ethnographic observation, analysis, and modeling of floor activity of the UCSD Thornton Hospital and the redesign of several major information systems. We shadowed and interviewed various nurses and other hospital personnel while taking copious photos and notes. Our analysis included looking for breakdowns and inefficiencies in work flow and coming up with potential design solutions.
